Doraleh Desalination Plant
Goals Achieved: Water quality meeting WHO standards; Increased production to adequately supply underserved areas; Improved management of drinking water production and distribution in Djibouti City and Balbala. Plant Specifications The desalination plant is designed to produce 22,500 m³ of water per day in Phase 1, with the capacity expandable to 45,000 m³ per day in Phase 2. 800-meter water intake pipeline; 500-meter subsea discharge pipeline; Installation of an 8.5-kilometer DN 700 pipeline (to reinforce the supply to the Faradhad reservoir); Construction of a reservoir with a capacity of approximately 5,000 m³ in Faradhad; Connection to the electrical grid. Commissioning in 2020.
Balbala Treatment Plant — 30,000 PE
Objectives: The project calls for the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Balbala with a capacity of 30,000 Population Equivalents (PE) and the creation of its associated networks, namely the 2-kilometer pipeline to transport raw effluent for treatment from the (PR) at Cheick OSMAN to the Balbala wastewater treatment plant, and the discharge network for treated effluent with a capacity of 600 ml. The Balbala wastewater treatment plant may be expanded in the future to: Initially, increase its total capacity to 60,000 PE by adding a new treatment unit with a capacity of 30,000 PE Location: Balbala Start of construction: December 2021 for a duration of 24 months Completion: December 2023 The plant is currently in the operational phase prior to final acceptance in September 2025.
